The subject is shown wearing the uniform of a captain in the 13th Regiment of the New York Militia, also known as the National Greys and Brooklyn Cadets, headquartered in Brooklyn. He was first commissioned a lieutenant by Governor Hamilton Fish in 1850 and recommissioned a captain three years later by Governor Horatio Seymour. His portrait, a gift to the Society from his son, was one of group of five portraits exhibited by the artist at the National Academy of Design in 1859.
