Inscribed along lower edge outside image in black and brown ink: "H.M.S. POICTIERS on 18th. October 1812, in lat. 37" 12' N. & long. 66" 2' W. falling in with, & capturing the U.S. sloop of war WASP, & her prize H.M. Brig / FROLIC, which the Wasp had captured the morning of the same day after a gallant defence which lasted 45 minutes, in which the Frolic / had the greater part of her crew killed & wounded."
