Description:
Mahogany Empire card table; square pivot top with molded edge, with halves joined by three leaf-edge tenons, above a rounded apron; pedestal consisting of hexagonal vase-shaped pillar and plinth bolted to oblong abacus base with four scroll feet on casters.
Gallery Label:
This table belonged to the donor's great-grandmother, Esther Boorman (Mrs. Robert C.) Smith (1781-1868), who resided at One Fifth Avenue in New York City. The attribution to cabinetmaker Joseph Meeks is based on the similarity of this table to one in a Joseph Meeks and Sons advertising broadside printed in 1833.
