Wood, steel, and brass revolver; rounded barrel; small, rounded brass trigger guard and blued steel gripstraps; slots for shoulder stock attachment on heel of backstrap and recoil shield; roll-engraved naval battle scene on cylinder; stamped marks on frame, cylinder, barrel, buttstrap, and trigger guard.
Gallery Label:
According to accession records, this pistol was captured from a Confederate cavalryman at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 11, 1862 by John Spence, of the New York Volunteer Regiment of Highlanders. The barrel and loading lever on this revolver are not the standard types for this model, but closely resemble those of the Colt Model 1860 Army and 1861 Navy revolvers, so this gun may have been reassembled from surplus parts.
