Developed during Colt's golden age of percussion manufacture, the Third Model Dragoon became one of the standard large-caliber, paper cartridge handguns used by cavalrymen and civilians in the decade before the Civil War, and after the war was replaced by a new line of metallic cartridge revolvers. The pistol was used by Lt. John Ramsey of the 6th New York Cavalry during the Civil War.
