Commemorative cast bronze medal and case issued for the 100th anniversary of the Metropolitan Opera; obverse of medal depicts exterior of Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center; reverse depicts opera's interior.

The Metropolitan Opera Company was formed in 1883 when a number of wealthy residents of New York City were unable to obtain boxes at the Academy of Music on 14th Street. Built in the Italian Renaissance style at Broadway and 39th Street, the Metropolitan Opera House seated 3700. In 1966, a new Opera House was built at Lincoln Center. The Metropolitan Opera remains the dominant opera company in the United States and one of the most important in the world.
