Description:
Rectangular cornerstone with carved inscription.
Gallery Label:
This cornerstone was laid in 1775, at a ceremony led by Mayor Whitehead Hicks. The stone, described by I.N. Phelps Stokes as "a red sand or free stone, about twenty-six inches by fourteen" formed part of a two story dark gray structure, "with a pediment in the front and in the rear" (Sutton, 43.) The stone was found on September 3rd, 1838, and was donated to the N-YHS in 1854 (I.N. Phelps Stokes, Iconography, vol. 5, 1754.)
