Description:
Porcelain covered pitcher with gilt reeded intertwined handle with gilt blossom and branch terminals; domed cover with gilt rim and foo dog knop; gilt beaded oval medallion with grisaille portrait of George Washington and identical medallion on opposite side with gilt initials of Benjamin Hoppin.
Gallery Label:
This covered pitcher, or cider jug, bears the gilt initials of Providence merchant Benjamin Hoppin (1777-1865). Hoppin was a partner in the firm of Wetmore, Hoppin & Co., a New York subsidiary of the large Providence firm Edward Carrington & Co., which engaged chiefly in the China trade and textile manufacturing. One side of the pitcher is decorated with a grisaille portrait of Washington from a stipple engraving by David Edwin after the portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The pitcher was intended for cider or 'small beer' (beer low in alcohol content).
