Description:
Crazy quilt patchwork square centering an Abraham Lincoln commemorative mourning ribbon; consisting of random patches of silk brocades, taffetas and velvets sewn together in mulitcolored threads by herringbone, lazy daisy, straight and buttonhole stitches; lined with white cotton.

Crazy quilts (or "Japanese" patchwork) became popular with the Japonisme movement in decorative arts during the 1870's. Japanese and Japanese-inspired objects were highlighted at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876 during the expansion in trade by Western countries with the East.
