Mark: stamped on base: "W.G.Forbes" in a conforming rectangle between an eagle's head in an oval and a sheaf of wheat in a rectangle (DuBois' pseudohallmarks)
Description:
Seamed silver creamer; oval boat shaped body seamed beneath the tapered strap handle, on an applied vertical foot ring and a flat oval base; short wide pouring lip with an applied horizontal band at the rim; simple, scalloped line-border engraved on the foot ring a; bright-cut geometric floral design below the rim; shield-shaped reserve on both sides of the body surrounded by an engraved garland and an oval of geometric designs; engraved with the initials, "AMW" in script in the front reserve; makers marks on the base.
Gallery Label:
According to the New-York Historical Society Annual Report this tea service came from the Verplanck Mansion at 3 Wall St (1750-1822). A similar service with the marks of Forbes and DuBois can be found at the Yale University Art Gallery (1960.53.1-3).
