Bronze struck medal with obverse showing draped male bust facing right with oak wreath beneath and legend above: "CYRUS W. FIELD." Reverse bears inscription at center, enclosed by laurel wreath: "PRESENTED/TO/CYRUS W. FIELD,/BY A FEW OF HIS FRIENDS IN/NEW YORK,/FOR HIS/PERSEVERANCE,/IN SUPERINTENDING/THE LAYING OF THE/ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH/CABLE/AUG. 5TH 1858"; legend around border with thirteen stars below: "NIL DESPERANDUM PERSEVERANTIA VINCIT." Medal is inset into rectangular dark brown molded ornate fitted plastic case with dark red silk velvet interior.
