This dairy thermometer was used on the Catskills dairy farm of Joseph Burr Buckman (1851-1929) and his wife Corinne Barbour (1860-1936). The couple purchased an 84-acre farm in the Catskills hoping that the fresh air would help their son with tuberculosis. Joseph Buckman traveled by train to New York City to work in a hat factory, while his wife managed the extensive farm. The milk produced by their farm was kept fresh by an artesian well and was picked up regularly by a milk company.
