The subject was the fifth son of Joshua Mead and his first wife, Rachel (Knapp) Mead of Round Hill, Greenwich, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale College in 1807 and studied medicine in Philadelphia with Dr. Benjamin Rush. He practiced medicine in Greenwich from 1810 until the end of his life. He also served in the Connecticut state senate (1845-46). His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.
