Description:
Crystal jug-type decanter and stopper in silver and 18 k gold mounts. Decanter mounts has base of octagonal silver frieze decorated with 18 k gold lettering "1855/May 29/1905" and framed with 18 k gold base-band. Decanter mount extends from frieze to neck in form of naturalistic openwork basket of trailing foliage accented with 18 k gold woodbine leaves and branches. Cap of stopper is mounted in silver with 18 k gold accents.
Gallery Label:
This silver and 18K gold tray and decanter belonged to Frank Vincent Burton (1855-1922) and depict his Hudson River estate Woodbine, completed in 1905. A prominent New York merchant, Burton was a participant in the legendary 1903 Billings dinner, where guests dined on horseback at Louis Sherry's celebrated Fifth Avenue restaurant.
