Description:
Molded redware dish with with sgraffito decoration: large two-headed eagle with heart-shaped trunk flanked by two stylized flowers and peacocks with inscription above and on border in old German; green patches (copper oxide) under a lead glaze.
Gallery Label:
Pennsylvania German potters occasionally inscribed proverbs or witty sayings on their wares. The rim of this plate translates to: "Whoever gladly lets himself be punished will become wise, but whoever goes unpunished will remain a fool." Between the heads of the eagle, Huebener has inscribed, "Here is depicted a double eagle."
