The subject was the son of wine importer Dominick Lynch (1754-1844), who had his place of business in New York City. For a while the subject was deputy surveyor of New York, but later was a lawyer in Rome, New York, of which city he was a founder. One of the subject's sisters was married to "a Mr. Luquer of Brooklyn," and it was through her family that the portrait descended.
