Compton, a native of Wooster, Ohio, received his Ph.D. was Princeton in 1916 and later became professor of physics at Washington University (1920-23) and at the University of Chicago (1923-45). He received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1927 for his work with X-rays. In the early and middle 1940s the artist, Enit Kaufman, made many portrait studies such as this one in a series intended to capture the likenesses of the notable men and women who had made significant contributions to the nation.
