Gallery Label:
A noted pathologist, Whipple was born in Ashland, New Hampshire. He is perhaps best known for his experiments demonstrating the relationship between the liver and the disease of anemia. For this work he received, jointly with George R. Minot and William P. Murphy, the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1934. In this portrait he is shown working at a table with his microscope.
