This Air Force tailcoat was worn by Colonel Stedman Shumway Hanks of New York during World War II; the Society owns the complete uniform. According to Col. Hanks, this uniform was not regulation issue in 1960 when it was donated. It was, however, required evening dress when the U.S.A.F. became a separate department of the War Department. It was required only for official receptions such as those at the White House and when military dignitaries held special meetings with foreign representatives.
