Description: 
Black wool Naval officer's dress trousers with a stripe of gilt lacing along the side of each leg; vertical 5 button fly with a tab at the top left with 2 buttons which fasten to a strap of pin striped silk on the inside; slit right side watch pocket at the waistline, 7 buttons around the waistband, 2 buttonholes at the waistband on either side of the first left side button; waistband, fly and watch pocket lined with white silk, the hem of each leg lined with brown silk.

These trousers were worn by Naval Chief-Engineer William Leonard Nicoll (1842-1887). The Society also owns other pieces to this uniform, as well as other uniform articles worn by Nicoll.
