Description: 
Dark blue wool serge stirrup-foot dress trousers with 2" wide gilt stripe down the side of each leg; 3 button fly covered with 6 button flap fly; 4 suspender buttons; 2 straps at the center of the back beneath the waistline to buckle on a rectangular buckle with double-tongued chape; a pocket at each hip, right side watch pocket; waistband, pockets and interior fly lined with white linen; all button plain, black-painted metal.

These dress trousers were worn by Stephen Keyes Stanton (1826-1914), Secretary of Legation in Paris under Richard Rush, during President Polk's administration, in 1847-1849. The Society also owns the tailcoat to this uniform.
