Born in Providence, R. I., Edith Hope Goddard was the daughter of Col. William W. Goddard and Mary Edith (Jenks) Goddard. In 1894 she was married to Charles Oliver Iselin, a banker with the firm of Adrian Iselin and Company, whose first wife, Frances (Garner) Iselin had died in 1890. A well-known beauty and an expert golfer and sailor, the subject was the only woman ever to sail as a member of a crew defending the America's Cup.
