Description:
Red velvet apron embroidered with gold thread and spangles, with a straight edge at the top, a top flap with rounded corners, straight sides and rounded corners at the bottom, the bottom edge comes to a slight point in the center, silk brocade edging and metal coil fringe all around, the top flap has a formée cross in the center, there is a pentangle star in the center of the apron with a hand of charity in the middle, beneath the star are three interlocking circles, the apron is bordered on the sides and bottom with a floral and vine motif, the belt is of silk brocade which buckles on the right side.
Gallery Label:
This apron belonged to John Stoneacre Ellis (1828-1896), who was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Temple Lodge No. 17, San Francisco, California. The Odd Fellows is a fraternal and benevolent order established in 1795.
