The Empire State building, world's tallest until the 1970s, was built by the firm of Shreve, Lamb and Harmon with structural collabortion by the Starrett Bros. and Eken. It broke records not only for height, but for speed of construction. Demolition of the old Waldorf Astoria took place on Oct. 1, 1929, and by May 1, 1931, the 102- story building was completed, fourty-five days ahead of schedule. Investors for the project included John Raskob, Pierre S. duPont, and Alfred E. Smith.
