Description:
Single epaulet with gilt fabric onthe tope, metal and cotton cord boulion the the shoulder end, single button hole at opposite end; reverse reinforced with metal bar across the shoulder, lined with white wool felt, boulion end cushioned and covered with white silk.
Gallery Label:
This epaulet was owned by William H. Paine, who wrote on a note accompanying the object that it was worn during the War of 1812. Col. William H. Paine served as a surveyor in the Army during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure. It was found among the items in his footlocker.
