Description:
Pair of colonel's epaulets; rigid strap with silver embroidered eagle on gold lace ground, and gilded brass crescent with roll of gold thread embroidery around outer edge; three layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring 3 3/8 inches in length and 1/2 inch in diameter; padded yellow silk lining with metal hooks and lace ties for fastening.

According to the accession records, these epaulets belonged to Abner Doubleday (1819-1893). Doubleday graduated from West Point in 1842 and served in the Mexican and Civil Wars. He is best known as the inventor of baseball.
