Description:
Pair of general or field officer's epaulets; rigid, capsule-shaped strap covered in gold lace, with gilded metal button embossed with eagle insignia, gold braid edging on tab end, and gold embroidered crescent with sequin trim; three layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring 3 3/4 inches in length and 3/8 inch in diameter; padded yellow silk lining with cloth ties for fastening.

According to the accession records, epaulets such as these were worn during the Civil War by general officers and field officers in the 1st Regiment, New York Volunteers.
