Description: 
Pair of major's (or engineer's?) epaulets; rigid, gold lace-covered strap without insignia; gilded brass button embossed with shield-breasted eagle (missing on "a"); gilded brass crescent with roll of gold thread embroidery around outer edge; three layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring 3 1/2 inches in length and 1/2 inch in diameter; brass channel fastener with spring mounted hook.
Gallery Label: 
According to the accession records, these epaulets were worn by Henry W. Benham (1813-1884), the donor's father. Benham graduated from West Point in 1837 and served as an engineer in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.
