Description:
Pair of naval officer's epaulets; rigid, gold lace-covered strap with gilded metal button embossed with an eagle perched on an anchor inside a circle of stars; silver embroidered leafy cross and two gold embroidered oak leaves aligned inside crescent; two layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring 3 inches in length and 3/8 inch in diameter; padded black velvet lining and brass channel fastener.
Gallery Label:
These epaulets were worn by Naval Chief-Engineer William Leonard Nicoll (1842-1887), the donor's uncle. Various other parts of Nicoll's uniform are also in the N-YHS collection.
