Description:
Pair of surgeon's epaulets; rigid, gold lace-covered strap with gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle; gilded brass crescent surrounding embroidered insignia with initials "MS" inside gold wreath with sequins; three layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring approximately 3 1/2 inches in length and 1/2 inch in diameter; brass channel fastener.
Gallery Label:
These epaulets were worn by the donor's father, Dr. Gabriel Grant (1826-1909), during the Civil War. Dr. Grant was Surgeon of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteers and later appointed Surgeon-in-Chief of Division.
