Description:
Pair of first lieutenant's epaulets; rigid, gold lace-covered strap with one silver embroidered bar and gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle; gilded brass crescent surrounding circular bright spot, marking location of missing insignia; three layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring approximately 3 1/4 inches in length and 1/4 inch in diameter; padded red velvet lining and brass strap fastener; in oval black painted storage box with hinged lid with flat top and wire handle; oval interior compartment with hinged lid centered at bottom of box.

According to the accession records, these epaulets were worn by Francis Frost Miller (1847-1892), who served with the 5th Regiment, National Guard New York.
