Description: 
White silk ribbon lined with blue silk at edges and top and bottom rosettes copper engraved on white ground "Canal Celebration/ THE MEETING OF THE WATERS/ NEW YORK, 1825"; central image of Erie canal encircled by laurel branches, cornucopia, sheaves of wheat and a caduceus; portrait of man at center, probably De Witt Clinton, who was governor of New York at the time and presided over the dedication ceremonies.

This ribbon commemorates the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 after eight years of construction, a project that would spur development of the port of New York City in years to come. The Erie Canal spanned 363 miles across New York state, connecting the Great Lakes with the Hudson River.
