Khaki-colored cotton canvas single-breasted "issue" field service officer's coat; double collar, 4 buttons down the front, 3 pockets on the front with flaps that button closed, 2 golden striped chevron on the left shoulder; 2 panels at the back; buttons unmarked and coat unlined; kerchief found in lower left pocket.

This field service coat is part of a uniform worn by Capt. Kurtz Eppley when he served in the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (Roosevelt's Rough Riders), in the Spanish-American War. This uniform is an example of the Army's first khaki "issue," as well as the first instance when a uniform was referred to as "field service."
