Description:
Wool U.S. yacht ensign of the yacht Bellemere; national colors with a white foul anchor surrounded by thirteen stars in the blue canton; thirteen red and white stripes; cotton hoist with metal grommets at each end.
Gallery Label:
In 1848, through the influence of the New York Yacht Club an act encouraging yachting was enacted. Included in this was a flag design prescribed by the Secretary of the Navy, which continues to be recognized as the Yacht Ensign: "...the American ensign, substituting in the blue field a white foul anchor, encircled by thirteen stars in white in lieu of a star for each state."
