In 1889, four territories were raised to statehood in quick succession. North and South Dakota came in on November 2, Montana on the 8th, and Washington on the 11th. The new stars the states represented were to be officially added to the 38 star constellation on July 4, 1890, but the day before Idaho was added, and then six days later Wyoming also joined the Union. During this period, flags with varying numbers of stars were flown. This thirty-nine star flag represents North Dakota. (Mastai)
