The original "Liberty" flag of Fort Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, SC, is not extant. It was designed by Colonel William Moultrie, commander of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment of Foot of 1775. The fort had no signal flag, so he designed one to match his troops uniforms, blue with a silver crescent moon on the front of their caps. It was the first American flag displayed in South Carolina.
