Description:
Wooden flagstaff with metal cuff that attaches lower and upper portions together, upper half interior is threaded to accept the lower half's screw top; cast metal spread eagle surmounting a ball finial; staff tapers at both ends; two metal plaques screwed onto lower portion below the cuff; top rectangular plaque inscribed, "PRESENTED/ TO/ LAFAYETTE/ CAMP No. 140./ DIVISION of NEW YORK./ SONS of VETERANS, U.S.A./ BY/ LAFAYETTE POST/ No. 140./ DEPARTMENTof NEW YORK/ GRAND ARMY/ of the REPUBLIC./ OCTO. 18TH 1889./ LOVE,/ CHERISH,/ DEFEAT.;" shield shaped plaque below inscribed, "PRESENTED/ BY/ GEN. W. T. SHERMAN/ ON/ BEHALF/ OF/ LAFAYETTE POST.
