Description: 
Forage cap with dark blue felt crown with soft sides and rigid, circular top; embroidered front insignia with "U.S." centered between curved branches of laurel; thin black cord (chin strap?) secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle; visor missing; brown leather sweatband and quilted black silk lining.
Gallery Label: 
This cap is identified in the accession records as a Civil War item "associated with" Dr. Gabriel Grant (1826-1909), father of the donor. Dr. Grant, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, served as Surgeon of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteers, and was later appointed Surgeon-in-Chief of Division.
