Description:
"Chasseur pattern" red wool felt forage cap; black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top with cruciform design of interlaced gold braid at center; five parallel vertical strips of gold braid on center front, center back, and either side of crown, joining five horizontal strips lining upper edge of blue felt band at base of crown; gilded brass chinstrap buttons embossed with shield-breasted eagle (chinstrap missing); black leather sweatband and black silk lining with drawstring.

According to the accession records, this cap was worn by Lt.-Colonel Noah L. Farnham as a member of the "First N.Y. Fire Zouaves" (11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment). Farnham joined the Zouaves on April 20, 1861. He was wounded in the Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, and died several weeks later.
