The subject was born in Baltimore, a great-grandson of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. As an engineer in New York, his most notable work was the foundation of the Statue of Liberty. He pursued painting as a hobby, but was eventually recognized as a professional. He created the illustrations for several of the books he wrote: "Charcoals of New and Old New York" (1912), for example. He also wrote several novels.
