The subject was born at Port Henry, New York, the son of Jonathan and Charlotte (Spencer) Witherbee. Following his graduation from Yale in 1874 he became associated with the iron mines at Port Henry and rose to the office of president of Witherbee, Sherman and Company, an ore mining company. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his daughter.
