The subject of this portrait was the son of Leonard Eichelberger and Elizabeth (Smyser) Eichelberger of York County, Pa. He was a colonel in the militia during the War of 1812 and served six terms in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1805-17). His portrait, a gift to the Society from his great-grandnephew, and its companion were probably painted in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where Eichholtz had his studio. The sheaf of wheat held in the subject's hand suggests his farming interests.
