A graduate of West Point, Pershing saw his first major action in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Then followed tours of duty against the Moros in the Philippines (1901-03) and against Pancho Villa in Mexico (1916). It was as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI, however, that Pershing achieved his greatest fame. Lockman, a member of the Society, painted portraits of many great men in American history between the two world wars. This one remained an unfinished sketch.
