George Newbold was a merchant in New York and was one of the first directors, along with Archibald Gracie, Oliver Wolcott, and William Bayard, of the Bank of America. Newbold became its fourth president. This portrait was painted after Peale's second trip to Europe in 1831, when he had established his studio in New York. The portrait is unsigned but attributed to Peale on stylistic grounds. The costume and hair suggest a date of the early 1830s.
