Description: 
Handmade linen hand towel cross stitched in the Pennsylvania Dutch style, the top outer corners have fabric tape loops for suspension; the top of the towel has a verse surrounded with floral garland border, below are rows of inscriptions interspersed with a variety of stylized images, including flowers, animals, chairs and plants, below is a tree with birds; there is a checkerboard pattern of drawnwork across the bottom which is trimmed with a rows of tassel fringe.

Hand towels were worked by adolescent girls of Pennsylvania German families and hung on the door between the kitchen and the sitting room of the home. The peak of hand towel production was between 1820 and 1850.
