Panton, a New York merchant, was a member of the federal jury in 1806 which acquitted his fellow merchant Samuel G. Ogden of charges of supplying men, money, and munitions for the ill-fated expedition of General Francisco de Miranda that sought to liberate Venezuela from Spain.
