Bronze struck medal with obverse having the emblem of ILGWU First Union Health Center with legend: "FIRST UNION HEALTH CENTER/IN THE UNITED STATES/FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY"; inscription: "1914 1964/AFL CIO." Reverse inscribed below hand emerging from scroll and holding fire and star: "ON NOVEMBER 20, 1963/PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY/SIGNED THE ACT OF THE/U.S. CONGRESS/AUTHORIZING THIS MEDAL/TO COMMEMORATE THE ESTABLISHMENT BY THE/ INTERNATIONAL LADIES'/GARMENT WORKERS UNION/OF THE/FIRST UNION HEALTH CENTER/IN THIS NATION." Medal is inset in two rectangular cardboard cases.

The Act of Congress authorizing a medal to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ILGWU's health center, the first in the United States, was signed into Law by President John F. Kennedy on November 20, 1963 - the very last bill he signed. The pen with which he signed the Law was sent to David Dubinsky, President, International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union.
