A note on the reverse, in pencil, states that it was a sketch made at Inwood, New York, in 1889 by Udo Keppler, age seventeen, since "Jos. Keppler." At this period Udo's father, Joseph Keppler, Sr., had a home on the summit of Inwood Hill, now Inwood Hill Park, New York City.
