Description:
Metal embroidered U.S. Army Engineer's shield-shaped insignia with stars across the top, applied against black wool felt ground.
Gallery Label:
This insignia was probably worn by William H. Paine, who served as a surveyor in the Army during the Civil War. It was found among the items in his footlocker. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure.
