Isaac Carleton, of Charlestown, Mass., was a merchant in the East India trade. On a return trip from London he was murdered by pirates in the Gulf of Mexico, when all but the cabin boy were made to walk the plank. This miniature, a gift from Carleton's great-granddaughter, was probably executed during Ramage's short residence in the Boston-Charlestown area.
